About Bristol City Yoga
Since 2002, our studio has been a space for quiet practice, contemplation, laughter, growth, transformation and support. These qualities have become integral to everything we do, helping to form the fabric of the building and inspiring everyone who works here. Our studio has been on a long journey, the building has changed, the team has changed, but one thing has stayed the same: the Yoga. Despite yoga’s ever-evolving forms, we try to stay true to the definition of yoga as union, a philosophy which allows all humans space to find peace, and to be truly themselves.
In 2008, teacher Laura Gilmore took over the space and became director of Bristol City Yoga, offering high-quality yoga teaching in a number of traditions. Our current studio manager - Lizzie - has been along for the ride since 2013. Starting as a karma yogi helping to keep the studio clean, Lizzie now keeps the whole studio up and running. Both Laura and Lizzie teach regular classes and workshops in the studio.
In 2009, Laura opened Bristol School of Yoga, a teacher training school that offers high-quality teacher training.
On reception, you’ll find the wonderful Cara. When she’s not checking students into classes and keeping everything running, Cara is can be found in our therapy rooms as a talented Hawaiian massage therapist and counseller.
Our marketing manager, Abbie, started on the team as a receptionist after taking a break from Digital Marketing while she trained in holistic bodywork and Bengali Massage. Abbie’s a creative soul, spending her free time on her many side hustles and projects.
Our karma yogi’s Hannah and Polly keep the studio running smoothly and looking beautiful. Polly lets her creative streak run wild with our blackboards and signage and Hannah brings her brightness (and amazing hair!) into the studio every week to help with busy classes.
Finally, there’s Tinker; our studio dog who’s been with us since a puppy, showing us the real shape downward dog should take and inappropriately barking at students one minute and rolling over for belly rubs the next.
And never forgetting our regular students who are the heart of our community.
Our purpose is to inspire and support every student who comes to practice with us by providing high-quality teaching and down to earth classes in a safe and welcoming environment.
Accessibility: regardless of age, size, gender, fitness, diet or lifestyle, we strive to create a space where everyone can develop an individual practice that is meaningful and beneficial to them.
Quality: we work with hand-picked, experienced teachers to create classes, courses and workshops that honour the tradition and lineages of yoga as well as exploring and discovering its ever-changing landscape.
Community: We’ve been in the same spot for over 15 years, and while we’ve changed and grown as a studio, so has the community around us in Stokes Croft. We’re proud to be part of this beautiful, vibrant Bristolian community where everyone belongs and is welcome.
